The Blockchain for Education: An Introduction

Image result for Blockchain
Is blockchain poised to be “the next big thing” in education?
This has become a question I hear with increasing frequency about a technology that, up until quite recently, was primarily associated with the cryptocurrency Bitcoin. The subtext to the question, I suppose: do educators need to pay attention to the blockchain? What, if anything, should they know about it?

Image result for Blockchain
Admittedly, I haven’t bothered to learn much about blockchain or Bitcoin either, despite the last few years of zealous headlines in various tech publications. I haven’t included either in any of the “Top Ed-Tech Trends” series I’ve written. And frankly, I’m still not convinced there’s a “there” there. But with the news this year that Sony plans to launch a testing platform powered by blockchain, with some current and former Mozilla employees exploring the blockchain and badges, and with a big promotional splash at SXSWedu about blockchain’s potential to help us rethinking learning (as “earning” no less), I realized it was time to do some research (for myself) in the hopes of writing a clear explanation (for others too) of what blockchain is – one that isn’t too technical but that doesn’t simply wave away important questions by resorting to buzzwords and jargon – that blockchain is “the most important IT invention of our age,” for example.
This is the early result of that research. It’s meant to serve as an introductory guide for those in education who are interested in learning a bit more about the blockchain and its potential applications in ed-tech.

Blockchain is the technology which powers Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other cryptocurrencies. It is an immortal, immutable, openly accessible ledger of all transactions which have happened in the network since its inception. Almost every cryptocurrency has its own Blockchain. New transactions are registered and compiled in batches called "blocks" at regular time intervals; the blocks are created via the process called "Bitcoin mining" and added to the end of the "chain" of all the existing blocks, hence the name for the system. Blockchain's existence allows every user to verify the fact that every specific transaction has indeed taken place at a specific moment in time.

Likely Xiaomi Redmi S2 shows up on TENAA with 6-inch display and 3 storage/RAM variants (2/16 ,3/32 ,4/64)

TENAA is China’s certification authority for electronic devices. All smartphones sold in China are eventually certified by TENAA, so monitoring the website for new listings can be a valuable source of information for upcoming devices. The recently launched Honor 10, for example, had most of its specifications listed on TENAA prior to launch. Now, a new Xiaomi device with a 6-inch display and 3 storage/RAM variants has appeared on TENAA, and we believe it’s the Xiaomi Redmi S2.
There are three reasons we believe that this unknown Xiaomi device is indeed the Xiaomi Redmi S2. First, the certification code (M1803E6E) matches the device’s internal codename in the firmware files that we obtained (where “IS_E6” refers to the codename for the Redmi S2). We aren’t 100% sure what the “E” at the end is for, but we do know that the Redmi S2 will launch globally (we’re positive there’s an Indian variant) so it might be related to that. Next, the specifications for the TENAA listing match what we confirmed in the Redmi S2’s firmware files. Finally, the timing of this certification page going up hints that it’ll be launching soon—which is something we suspected given that the device’s marketing name only recently started appearing in the firmware files.
The new information we can glean from the TENAA listing is that the device will have a 6-inch display, an approximately 3,000mAh battery, 9 color options, will measure at 160.7 x 77.3 x 8.1mm, weigh in at 170g, and will have 3 storage/RAM variants (2/16GB, 3/32GB, and 4/64GB.) Adding this new information onto what we already know of the Xiaomi Redmi S2 from our report last week, we believe that the specifications of the device will be as follows.
FeatureSpecification
Size & Weight160.7 x 77.3 x 8.1mm. 170g.
Display6-inch 18:9 1440×720 LCD
SoCmsm8953 (Qualcomm Snapdragon 625)
Storage16/32/64GBs with microSD card slot
RAM2/3/4GBs
SoftwareAndroid 8.1 Oreo with MIUI 9
Rear Camera(Sony 12MP IMX486 OR OmniVision 12MP OV12A10) + Samsung 5MP S5K5E8
EIS
Portrait Mode
Front CameraSamsung 5MP S5K5E8
Face Unlock
Battery~3,000 mAh
ColorsWhite, Silver, Gray, Black, Gold, Rose Gold, Blue, Red, and Pink
RegionsChina & India
The only discrepancy to note between our findings and the TENAA listing is the battery capacity. This is because the value listed in the firmware files may be listed as 100mAh higher than what is listed on certification websites. For instance, the battery capacity of the Huawei Mate 9 and Huawei Mate 10 is advertised as 4,000mAh, however, apps such as AIDA64 will report the capacity as 3,900mAh for both devices. This is because the 3,900mAh value is the rated capacity whereas the 4,000 mAh is the typical capacity of the battery. Lastly, the remaining 20mAh difference is likely due to just rounding.
If you are interested in downloading the default lockscreen wallpaper from the Xiaomi Redmi S2, you can find it here. Take note that it won’t look that great on any FHD or above device. We aren’t sure when the device will launch, but it’ll probably be soon. The Xiaomi Mi 6X is likely launching on April 25th. I haven’t heard of another upcoming Xiaomi event yet, but I bet we’ll learn about one soon.

Motorola's Moto G6 mid-range smartphone range has been making news for the past few weeks with leaks, rumours, and high-quality renders doing the rounds. In an interesting development, invites have been sent out for a Motorola event in Brazil slated for April 19. According to reports, this launch event is expected to witness the announcement of the Moto G6, Moto G6 Play, and Moto G6 Plus. We could also see the Moto Z3 Play getting launched at this event.
A report by AndroidPit reveals the said invite which shows that the event is scheduled for April 19 in the city of Sao Paulo. While the image does not give much away in terms of text, the background in the invite is similar to the wallpaper seen in leaked Moto G6 renders recently, hinting that the Moto G6 series will be unveiled at the event. However, it is unclear whether this will be a global or a country-specific announcement - thus, the smartphones may launch globally before, or after that date.

To recap, specifications and image renders of all three phones in the Moto G6 range have been leaked beforehand. Starting off with the lower-end variant, the Moto G6 Play is expected to sport a 5.7-inch HD+ (720x1440 pixels) IPS display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 427 SoC, 2GB of RAM, 16GB inbuilt storage, and a 4000mAh battery. In the camera department, the Moto G6 Play might get a single 13-megapixel rear sensor and a 5-megapixel selfie sensor.
On the other hand, the mid-specced Moto G6 is rumoured to run Android 8.0 Oreo out-of-the-box, sport a 5.7-inch full-HD+ (1080x2160 pixels) display, be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 SoC, and arrive with 4GB of RAM, 64GB inbuilt storage, and a 3000mAh battery. Additionally, the variant is expected to feature a rear dual camera setup with a 16-megapixel primary sensor and a 5-megapixel secondary sensor.
And, lastly, the Moto G6 Plus will most likely get specifications such as a 5.93-inch full-HD+ (1080x2160 pixels) IPS display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 SoC, 6GB of RAM, 64GB of inbuilt storage, a 3200mAh battery, and the same dual rear camera setup as the one on the Moto G6.
Pricing details for two phones in the Moto G6 range have also been leaked recently. The Moto G6 Play is suggested to sport a price tag of $199.99 (roughly Rs. 13,000) and the Moto G6 will likely be priced at $249.99 (roughly Rs. 16,300). Pricing and availability details for India are currently unknown
